What is today the city of Ogden was originally called Fort Buenaventura. It was the first community established by pioneers of European descent in Utah. Miles Goodyear, a trapper, established the settlement about a mile west of today's downtown area in 1846. Near the end of the following year, Mormon settlers purchased Fort Buenaventura for less than $2,000. The site of the original settlement is currently a park in Weber County.

Ogden is located not far from the historic "Golden Spike" ceremony that marked the place where the east and west sections of the First Transcontinental Railroad were conjoined. Ogden went on to become a major stopping point for passengers traveling between San Francisco and the East Coast.

Parks and Recreation

Just east of town there is an extensive system of trails that lead up into the foothills of the Wastch Range. Depending upon the season, these trails are used alternately for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, running and mountain biking. The rugged and solid quartzite cliffs in the foothills above town are favored by rock climbers of all skill levels. In the winter, the mountains east of the city serve up great downhill skiing at Wolf Mountain, Powder Mountain and Snowbasin resorts.

The city of Ogden also maintains a system of paved trails that run alongside both the Weber and the Ogden Rivers. A kayak park has been developed along the Weber River in the west side of Ogden. Kayakers enjoy both the Ogden and the Weber Rivers, especially when the spring snowmelt raises water levels.


The Harvest Moon Festival in Ogden has quickly emerged as the largest outdoor festival in all of northern Utah. The September event attracts over 10,000 visitors each year. Festivities range from arm wrestling competitions to a downtown criterium. Live music fills the air as kids enjoy face painting, pumpkin painting, mini-train rides and balloon art.
